MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT

FIRST CUT 2012,IRELAND

Ah, soon…………..this was the first cut of hay last year in Moynalty, County Meath.  Soon, soon……………  In the meantime, I’m guiding a small group of tourists through the west and north of Ireland, which are very much overlooked regions of this magical country.  I’m in Lisdoonvarna tonight (County Clare)  , Kilronan on the Aran Island of Inis Mor_(County Galway) tomorrow then on to Connemara……………….

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: BLARNEY CASTLE, COUNTY CORK

BLARNEY CASTLE

I loved my first visit to Blarney Castle in County Cork!  Although the winding staircases got steeper and steeper, narrower and narrower, and wetter and wetter, it was wonderful to achieve the top!  The views were incredible.  And, of course, most visitors, including my daughter, lay down on their backs, had someone hold their legs and reached WAY back to kiss the Blarney Stone.  I passed (bad back, bad knees, blah blah……).  The Stone of Eloquence supposedly bestows the “gift of gab” on those who kiss it.  I figured I already had it so I just kissed my daughter!  And we made our way back down all those stairs.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: BEARA PENINSULA

BEARA PENINSULA

Down in the southwest corner of Ireland, you’ll find craggy shores, numerous bays and inlets, mountains and three famous peninsulas…….the Dingle, the Iveragh (which includes the Ring of Kerry) and the Beara.  The Beara, or Bere, is the least known, least visited and, I think, the most beautiful.  This photo was taken near Garnish Point in County Cork.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: LAKES OF KILLARNEY

LAKES OF KILLARNEY

County Kerry offers spectacular scenery and the Lakes of Killarney are among  the most lovely sights.    The 3 lakes, Lough Leane, (Lower) Muckross (Middle) and the Upper Lake  are surrounded by the Macgillicuddy Reeks, the highest mountains in Ireland. All are part of the Killarney National Park.  The ever-shifting clouds provide moving bands of light and shadow on the  mountains, adding to the magical quality of the area.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: DOWNHILL, COUNTY ANTRIM

DOWNHILL WATERFALL

About an hour outside of Belfast, I came upon this gorgeous waterfall in the hamlet of Downhill, in the Glens of AntrimCounty Antrim has so many wonderful locations, including the Mussenden Temple, the Giant’s Causeway,  the Old Bushmills  Distillery, Dunluce Castle, the Portstewart Golf Club, soaring sea cliffs, golden strands, mountains and, yes, waterfalls!

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: GALWAY BAY

GALWAY BAY

So many of Ireland’s well-known towns and cities are located along the coast of the island.  Galway, on the Atlantic Ocean, has even had a very lovely song written about Galway Bay, pictured above.  It is a very lively place with great music, culture and craic (fun)!

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: CONNOR PASS

CONNOR PASS

This lonely winding road is through the Connor Pass crossing from County Kerry to County Cork.  This desolate area epitomizes the empty rural spaces found in the southwest of Ireland.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: KINGSFORT RAINBOW

KINGSFORT RAINBOW

This is one of the things I miss when I spend the winters in Florida, rather than at home in Moynalty, Ireland.  Yes, it rains a lot but the compensation is the abundance of rainbows.  It often rains in the afternoon, when the sun is in the front of the house, so I look out the back windows and BEHOLD!  The glorious rainbow appears and if you look carefully, there is a second one above it.

I know there are also rainbows in Florida, but I live in a townhouse with limited windows, in a complex with 3 story buildings all around and in a town with lots of structures to obscure them.  However, I am on a golf course, a 5 minute walk from the beach and blessed in so very many ways.  And I can store up my rainbow and sunrise/sunset mental (and digital!)  images then pull them out whenever needed!  Life is good.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: BANNA STRAND, CO. KERRY

BANNA STRAND, CO. KERRY

Banna Strand, on Tralee Bay in County Kerry, Ireland, is where the Irish patriot Sir Roger Casement was landed by submarine on April 21, 1916.  He had been promised 20,000 rifles by the German government to assist in what became known as The Easter Uprising.  Sadly, he was captured by the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and the rifles were sunk offshore Cobh, in County Cork when the Aud Norge was scuttled after her capture.   Although the 1916 Uprising was not successful, the execution of its leaders by the British outraged the Irish and so garnered support for the rebels.  Irish Independence was declared in 1922.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: COUNTY MEATH SUNRISE

Accidental Sunrise

Like virtually every sunrise I see, this one is accidental!  Not being a morning person, I see many more sunsets but happened to be up early one morning in October.  This struck me so much that I had to grab a sweater, my camera and shoes and go out into the backyard to shoot it.  Taken at Kingsfort, County Meath, Ireland.
