MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT

FIRST CUT 2012,IRELAND

Ah, soon…………..this was the first cut of hay last year in Moynalty, County Meath.  Soon, soon……………  In the meantime, I’m guiding a small group of tourists through the west and north of Ireland, which are very much overlooked regions of this magical country.  I’m in Lisdoonvarna tonight (County Clare)  , Kilronan on the Aran Island of Inis Mor_(County Galway) tomorrow then on to Connemara……………….

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: KINGSFORT RAINBOW

KINGSFORT RAINBOW

This is one of the things I miss when I spend the winters in Florida, rather than at home in Moynalty, Ireland.  Yes, it rains a lot but the compensation is the abundance of rainbows.  It often rains in the afternoon, when the sun is in the front of the house, so I look out the back windows and BEHOLD!  The glorious rainbow appears and if you look carefully, there is a second one above it.

I know there are also rainbows in Florida, but I live in a townhouse with limited windows, in a complex with 3 story buildings all around and in a town with lots of structures to obscure them.  However, I am on a golf course, a 5 minute walk from the beach and blessed in so very many ways.  And I can store up my rainbow and sunrise/sunset mental (and digital!)  images then pull them out whenever needed!  Life is good.

Accidental Sunrise

Like virtually every sunrise I see, this one is accidental!  Not being a morning person, I see many more sunsets but happened to be up early one morning in October.  This struck me so much that I had to grab a sweater, my camera and shoes and go out into the backyard to shoot it.  Taken at Kingsfort, County Meath, Ireland.

KINGSFORT RADIANCE

KINGSFORT RADIANCE

This was taken in late afternoon last October, following a heavy hail storm.  The skies had been so dark and stormy that I was surprised when I looked out the kitchen window and saw the sun break through.  Even though it was still raining, I ventured out onto the patio and captured this view of the lane leading to my home in Moynalty, County Meath, Ireland.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: RAINBOW OVER CO. CAVAN

CAVAN RAINBOW

Twice each year, I make a transition between 2 earthly Paradises, Moynalty,  Ireland and Jupiter,  Florida.  My most recent repositioning was last week, and, as always, the change was both bittersweet and welcome.   I love my life in rural Ireland with the peacefulness, the glorious beauty, the simple pleasures of homemaking,  my partner as my primary contact with humanity,  a turf and wood blaze nightly and a semi-stray kitty who sings and dances on the windowsills for her supper.

And, in Florida, I welcome the warm weather, the proximity to the ocean, the fellowship of my JupiterFIRSTChurch family, a lively social life and, of course, the security of my partner’s continued presence and support.

This is a rainbow that I saw on my last weekend in Ireland.  We were on our way to Bailieborough, County Cavan and as we drove around a curve, it magically appeared out of a fast-moving gray cloud.  I love rainbows and they always remind me of God’s covenant with us, ( Genesis 9:13 ) and also remind me that, one day, my transition will be to another, Heavenly, Paradise.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: CO. MEATH AUTUMN

IRISH AUTUMN

When you think of autumn, you may think of flaming orange and crimson trees.  And when you think of Ireland, you may think of endless fields of green.  Both are beautiful sights.  As is this view from my kitchen window near Moynalty, County Meath, Ireland.  Even with the slight mist and glowering grey sky, the vibrancy of the redthorn bush, the golden yellow of the remaining birch leaves, the sparkling white of the berries and, of course, the legendary emerald fields offers a most pleasing vista.

I have no idea what kind of birds those are but they arrive in flocks and now, 2 days later, the bush is decimated of its berries!

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: MOYNALTY STEAM THRESHING, CO.MEATH

Ireland is a land of Festivals!  One of the most popular ones is the annual Moynalty Steam Threshing,  held on a Sunday in   August.  This year, the weather held for most of the day (it only drizzled a bit) and there were over 10,000 visitors.  As well as being able to see wheat being threshed by scythe-wielding men on horse drawn wagons there were wonderful demonstrations of gone-by Irish farming techniques.  This photo shows the “old fashioned” way of loading the grain into the steam powered threshing machine.  There is a lovely museum of antique farm machines and implements as well as outdoor kitchens set up to prepare traditional Irish foods such as boxty, soda bread, pancakes, etc as well as sausages, burgers and hot dogs.  The attractions ran the gamut from watching a pig roasting on a spit, listening to one of 4 or 5 musicians, taking a raffle on a bull calf (no, I didn’t win him!), looking at or buying everything from flowers and plants to home baked cakes and jams,  rides, horseshoeing demonstrations, and so on.

As you can probably tell, I love living in my adopted home village of Moynalty, County Meath Ireland!  There’s always something new to discover.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: MISTY MORNING, CO. MEATH

As I’ve said before, I rarely see the sunrise but on this August morning I happened to see the predawn mist rising.  I’ve photographed this particular tree hundreds of times here in Moynalty, County Meath but have never seen the hydrangeas appear so brilliantly colored.
