This bullaun is called the “Rolls of Butter” and dates back to about 3500 BC. It is the only multiple stone bullaun so far discovered, anywhere in the world. It’s located near Bonane, County Kerry, Ireland. Its purpose is a bit of a mystery but the placement of the wells mirror the lower part of the constellation of Orion as well as Sirius. There is an amazing number of astronomical features throughout the area, including stone circles, stone rows, standing stones etc.

This is just such an amazing country! I’ve now travelled over so much of it. Come visit….we’d love to have you!
This is absolutely phenomenal, MJ! I had no idea of these bullauns’ existence. Just the idea of this one’s representing Orion and Sirius is mind-bending… Are those stones in the wells carved in, or removal? and if removable, how have they lasted so long??
They are LOOSE! I had the same question! Amazing that they’ve never been removed or vandalized…..such is the power of Irish myth, legend, mysticism. The angles, degrees of inclination, relative distances, etc are all corroborated. And the same is true of dozens of other sights and stones! This bullaun is not listed in guidebooks or anything. We met a man who has a huge interest in all of these and he took us there.
